Community Access Program Youth Initiative (CAP-YI)
The Community Access Program Youth Initiative (CAP-YI) is a part of Industry Canada’s Community Access Program (CAP), which aims to ensure that Canadians have affordable public access to the Internet.
The objectives of the CAP Youth Initiative are:
To support the sustainability and long-term viability of CAP Sites by providing work experience for young Canadians in CAP Sites;
To increase the use of the Information Highway across Canada to promote economic and social development at the community level; and
To allow young people to gain valuable skills related to Information Technologies (IT) thereby positioning them for longer term employment. Youth Interns are involved in: promoting and creating awareness of the CAP Site, training, technical support (where applicable), webpage development, research, and administration. Eligibility To participate in the CAP-YI program, all potential applicants must meet the following requirements:
Between the ages of 15 and 30
A Canadian citizen, or permanent resident;
Legally entitled to work in Canada;
Youth must not be collecting Employment Insurance Benefits during their internship.
Youth must be a student intending to return to school full-time after the internship if hired under Summer Stream Work Experience; and
Youth must be a high school graduate with some post-secondary education if hired under Career Focus Stream.
What CAP-YI Interns Do
Youth work as interns at CAP Sites across Canada, help individuals, community organizations and small businesses improve their knowledge and effective use of the internet and related information technologies.
Specific Activities May Include:
Delivering Internet training sessions;
Researching and developing websites;
Drafting publicity materials;
Organizing information fairs and special events; and Providing technical support to the CAP Site.
The Community Access Program Youth Initiative (CAP-YI) provides CAP Sites around the
North Territories with the opportunity to have a youth intern work out of their center
Smart Community Society is still looking for some interns at some CAP Sites Locations in the NWT.

The rate of pay is $15.00 per hour plus 4% vacation pay.
Interns will be responsible for assisting the public with using the various Information and communication technologies
(ICT) available at the CAP Sites. Applicants should have an interest in technology, enjoy working with people, posses
strong communication and presentation skills and demonstrate a high level of professionalism.
